Hilo:
Check out the new cafe in Hilo Bot.com
Ken's House of Pancakes, huge menu with loads of island and diner style food, open 24 hours, breakfast anytime. The first restaurant I've been to on the Big Island and still one of my favorites. At the corner of Hwy 11 and Hwy 19 (on the way to downtown), you can't miss it.
Ayuthaya Thai, great little hole in the wall Thai place, yummy food for cheap. lunch buffet ($ 4.00/plate) or menu dinner. 804 Kilauea (accross the big banyan tree), ph 933-2424
Naungh Mai Thai Kitchen, great Thai food in Hilo. Behind Garden Exchange 86 Kilauea Ave. Tel 934-7540
Garden Snack Club in Hilo next to Naungh Mai, behind Garden Exchange on Kilauea ave. It's a small hole in the wall restaurant with personal service and very good homestyle thai food and homemade ice creams. Don't go there in a hurry as the service might be slow.
Miyo's, little japanese restaurant on the water, tempuras and fried stuff, very homestyle, no sushi. 400 Hualani, Suite 19A (Waiakea Village), ph 935-2273
Cafe 100, a must eat there at least once Hilo institution, solid local hawaiian food, open air seating, home of the Loco Moco, just down from Ayathuya Thai on Kilauea Ave.
Ocean Sushi, cheap and yummie sushi. Corner of Haili & Keawe. Closed sundays, which sucks.
Tsunami Grill, japanese food, tempuras and sushi (from Ocean Sushi accross the street). Open sundays. No alcohol, no BYOB.
Don's Grill, local style American diner food.
Cafe Pesto, Bayfront downtown Hilo, touristy and pricy, but good food.
Vernas Drive In, local food, outdoor seating. There's one in Kalapana, one in Keau' and one accross from Ken's House of Pancakes in Hilo.
