In Hawaiian cosmology, Maunakea is the origin place of the Hawaiian people. The Hawaiian genealogy teaches that the summit of the mountain is the meeting place of Earth Mother, Papahānaumoku, and Sky Father, Wākea and that the Hawaiian people are directly descended from this union. Therefore, Maunakea is utmost sacred ground; it is the piko (umbilical cord) of Native Hawaiian existence.
I drive to Pu'uhonua Pu'uhuluhulu Maunakea from Hilo countless times since July to help run our radio station, learn from elders, listen to mo'olelo and lend a helping hand when it's needed. I often bring my camera and take a few pictures like this one.
I serve hot chai and talk story with kia'i, alaka'i and kūpuna and present them with my newest work honoring our sacred mountain.
Look for the tall German guy in the mahalo shirt with a big Aloha 'Āina thermos for a cup of chai and a free sticker.
If you can't make it to Maunakea I'm happy to send you one.
Please write me a note and tell me
What you are doing today to mālama Maunakea
and I'll be happy to send you a sticker.
I may publish your note.
Please mail your note

Ideally they should be #10 envelopes (so I don't have to fold the sticker) with a first class stamp - but other envelopes will do the job.
